How inspiring it was! I have taught American History and when I teach the Declaration and other American documents, I am both inspired by their goals and saddened by the many ways in which this nation has failed to live up to them. I admit to putting aside by professional educator objectivity and urge my students to take an active part in bringing us closer to their ideals. As I am urging them, I am reminding myself to keep the flame alive.Jane Dixonnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7480207999294007243.post-31862719084501309992014-07-04T06:57:41.575-04:002014-07-04T06:57:41.575-04:00Funny you should say this - I got up this morning ...Funny you should say this - I got up this morning listening to the reciting of the Declaration of Independence and was struck by a mix of shame and of hope, torn between loving it here, and carrying the burden of knowing the awful history and current practices. As in the movie, Contact, when the species from another planet meets a human and says, You're capable of such beautiful dreams, and such horrible nightmares.. Indeed.LoraKim Joynernoreply@blogger.com
